PURCHASES FROM ALPS 7TH CHAKRA FARM: 80% GOES TO THE CATS IN OUR SANCTUARY - FOOD, BEDS, SPAY/NEUTER AND HEALTH THANK YOU FOR CARING SUPPORT!
Hello. Thank you for visiting our site. We are Chad and Aki who live in Oakley, California. We are creating a cage free cat sanctuary for feral cats who come to our property every night.
A home and care facility where feral cats who cannot be domesticated can live in a free roaming, safe, comfortable and healthy environment with other cats for the rest of their life.
(Shelters are temporary places where cats are cared for in a safe environment until they find a forever home and typically the cats are kept in kennels)
We have now rescued 11 cats who came onto our property. Three more cats have lived on our back porch since last November, and over 15 additional cats have come to eat every evening on our deck. We need to create a sanctuary because these cats need a safe and comfortable place after they get a health check, vaccine, and fixed. We would like to take care of them for the rest of their life.
Our plan is to coexist with feral cats on our property. First, we create a place for the cats after they are fixed. We erect a fence inside our property attaching it to an existing out building to make a safe indoor/outdoor spot for the feral cats. Second, we trap them, health check, treat, vaccinate, and fix them because their health affects our environment and this controls the cat population. Third, once fixed they enter the sanctuary and it becomes their safe and comfortable forever home.
After we succeed with this project, we would like to help to create a large cat sanctuary at another location in this area. It would be a feral cats' paradise. We know that there a lot of feral cats in this area that need the communities help. The facility would be full service, once a feral cat arrives they receive all of the basic care they need. It is either their forever home or if they become domesticated they become available for adoption. A true sanctuary.
Co-neco(Ko-neko) means kitten in Japanese and Neco(Neko) means cat in Japanese. (Kitty Cat) In English our sanctuary name translates to kitty-cat cat sanctuary. The name contains the wish that all cats can live happily and safely.
Five years ago, our dog, Zsa Zsa, found three kittens on our property. We rescued them with Zsa Zsa’s assistance and adopted them into our family. They changed our life, of course in a good way. Cats are cute and cool. We love to live with them.
This is Aki. I’m sharing our story. We are creating a cat sanctuary because there are many feral cats on our property and every year the number increases as they have kittens. Not only that, their feces is scattered about, and foxes started to come to eat the cat’s food and they drop their feces too. I would like to say all is nice but honestly I would like to live in a clean environment. So, I asked my husband, Chad, to create a cat sanctuary on our property for the feral cats visiting our property. You know if we have a cat sanctuary here, we can maintain their feces, and the foxes would not be able to eat the cat’s food. That means, our property keeps clean and the cats also live in a safe, healthy and clean environment.
Some people say to us “ Don’t feed the cats, if so they go somewhere else.” Yes, that’s true. If we stop feeding, we can live in a clean environment. And we don’t spend our money to feed the cats.
However, Think about it, if our dog didn’t find our cats, they would be still surviving harshly outside or dead. Two years ago, I found two cats on our property. They were as cute as our cats. I couldn’t ignore them. I shared our cat’s food with them. Everyday, the number of cats who came to eat increased. We started to buy food for these cats. At that moment, we were fine.
We also learned about TNR(Trap, Neuter, Release). A rescue organization helped us. We caught two cats. We wanted to continue it, but they said they couldn’t help us anymore. So, we contacted the county TNR program, but TNR day we couldn’t catch them. I know, we are not professionals at trapping cats. We stopped trying TNR after we failed several times.
It seemed like our journey was at a standstill.
July 29th last year, that morning we found three tiny kittens without their mom on our property. My husband, Chad, is an animal lover. I think he automatically rescued them. (Actually, one of the kittens ran away to the neighbor’s property, so he couldn’t catch that kitten, but that kitten comes to eat every day now.) People say “Kittens are super cute.” Yes, they are. BUT, do you know that Feral cat’s kittens are dirty, have a lot of fleas and worms. Moreover, their feces smell so bad. Honestly, I didn’t feel the cuteness, I just felt scared to see a lot of fleas, and their feces smell knocked me out. This might be ruthless but it’s true. Chad is amazing. He gave them a bath several times but the fleas were stubborn.
Chad found a low cost vet, and we took the kittens there. They had a lot of issues. I wasn’t ready to take care of them, but there wasn’t a choice because all rescue are full and overwhelmed.
A few weeks later, we saw a fox on our property. The next day, we saw that there were three foxes eating the cat’s food. We knew there were kittens still outside. Chad rescued them. He caught one of the kittens by hand. ( Please do not do that) Another three kittens were caught using traps.
Do you know why Chad caught every kitten we saw on our property? We already saw at least five kittens that did not survive. I know that one of the kittens did not survive because of a hawk or coyote. That is why Chad tried hard.
I tell you, he is an animal lover and has a very kind heart. I am glad to marry him. Anyway, we have six kittens now. We took them to the vet for a health check, dewormer, flea treatment, medical treatment and vaccinations. We met a SPCA person at the vet. She understood our situation and she offered to help us with the kittens' spay/neuter. We are so appreciative.
Well, it sounds like a nice story, doesn't it? The reality is that we have eleven house cats (all rescued on our property) and over dozen of outside feral cats, they eat everyday. So we need a lot of food. There are feces every day, so we need to clean and maintain their litter boxes. We know in the spring they will have new kittens. We should create a sanctuary because we would like to take care of them for the rest of their life after fixed. There are at least 15 to 20 feral cats coming to eat that need to be trapped and fixed. The feral cat population in our immediate area is exploding and we have to try to help get it under control.
We have been trying it by ourselves but it is hard for just the two of us. If you help the cats and us, it would be really really appreciated.
I believe that this world is beautiful, and people are nice and kind. If you can imagine it, anything is possible. Right?
